V60 Pour Over
Here's a step-by-step guide to making a great cup of coffee using the V60 pour-over method:
Equipment
- V60 dripper
- V60 paper filter
- Kettle (ideally with a gooseneck spout for control)
- Coffee scale
- Grinder (for fresh beans)
- Timer
- Mug or carafe
Ingredients
- Fresh coffee beans (about 15-20g for one cup)
- Filtered water (around 200-300g for a 1:15 coffee-to-water ratio)
Steps
1. Prepare Your Water and Coffee
- Boil your water to about 200°F (93°C). If you don't have a thermometer, let the water sit for 30 seconds after boiling.
- Grind your coffee to a medium-fine consistency, similar to granulated sugar. Our regular ground coffee works well in a V60.
2. Rinse the Filter
- Place the filter in the V60 dripper.
- Pour hot water over the filter to rinse it. This removes any papery taste and preheats the dripper and carafe or mug. Discard the rinse water.
3. Add Coffee Grounds
- Add the ground coffee to the filter and level the grounds by gently shaking the V60.
4. Start the Bloom (First Pour)
- Start your timer and pour just enough water to saturate all the grounds (about twice the weight of coffee, e.g., 30-40g of water for 15-20g of coffee).
- Allow the coffee to "bloom" for about 30-45 seconds. This releases gases from freshly ground coffee and enhances flavour.
5. Second Pour
- After the bloom, continue pouring slowly in a circular motion, starting from the centre and spiraling outward, then back to the centre.
- Avoid pouring directly on the sides, which can cause channeling.
- Pour until you reach about half of your total water amount (100-150g of water if you're making a 200-300g brew).
6. Final Pour
- Continue pouring in a slow, controlled circular motion until you reach your total water weight.
- Let the water drain through the coffee completely, aiming for a total brew time of 2.5 to 3.5 minutes.
7. Serve and Enjoy
- Remove the dripper and gently swirl the coffee in the carafe or cup.
- Take a sip and enjoy the rich flavors!
Tips
- Experiment with grind size and pour technique to find the taste profile you like best.
- Try adjusting the bloom time or the pour intervals if you prefer stronger or milder flavours.
- This is the perfect way to make weekend coffee and then sit down and enjoy the sips while reading your favourite book.Â
